A Ballina diving expert who was drowned while trying to rescue four people from a sea cave on the north Mayo coast last October will have a trust fund established in his honour tomorrow evening.

Michael Heffernan (40), who was the training officer with the Grainne Uaile Sub Aqua Club, drowned in appalling conditions when he went to the assistance of the trapped people at Belderrig. His wife, Anne Marie, gave birth to their second child on Sunday. The trust fund organised by his club will be inaugurated by the Minister of State, Dr Tom Moffatt, at the local Bank of Ireland.
