Turkey 3 China 0
Turkey secured a place in the second round of the World Cup today after a comfortable victory over China. The win was enough to lift them ahead of Costa Rica on goal difference.
Turkey started the match needing a win and it duly arrived after goals from Hasan Sas, Bulent Korkmaz and a late volley from Umit Davala.
Feeble Chinese defending after six minutes saw Turkey go 1-0 up. Galatasaray's elusive midfielder Hasan Sas seizing on a mistake by Li Weifeng to blast high into the net.
China captain and goalkeeper, Jiang Jin, was soon picking the ball out of his net again when Bulent's back-post header dipped under the bar.
The early blitz could have knocked the fight out of China but they responded to the setback well, moving forward confidently.
They almost pulled one back near the half-hour mark when Yang Chen saw a thunderous volley come smashing back off an upright.
Emre Asik and Emre Belozoglu will miss the next match against the Group H winners after picking up yellow cards in the first half.
Turkey dominated proceedings after the break but made heavy weather of breaking down the Chinese defence.
China had second half substitute Shao Jiayi - on the pitch just 13 minutes - was sent off for a clumsy tackle on Emre Belozoglu.
10-man China eventually buckled and could do nothing to prevent Umit Davala from drilling home Turkey's third goal six minutes from time.
