ANKARA - The commander of the Turkish air force and six warships will arrive in northern Cyprus today for solidarity visits with the Turkish Cypriots to mark the 23rd anniversary of Ankara's occupation of the area, the Anatolia news agency said.

The warships will anchor off the northern port of Kyrenia while the air force commander, Gen Ahmet Corekci, will meet the Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mr Rauf Denktash, and attend weekend ceremonies to mark the intervention.

Officials in Ankara said earlier that the Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Bulent Ecevit, would also visit northern Cyprus on Sunday to express solidarity with the Turkish Cypriots. He was prime minister at time of the 1974 Turkish invasion. - (Reuter)
