Two men arrested in Athlone following an incident where a garda was stabbed appeared at a special sitting of Athlone District Court yesterday morning.
The garda, a member of the Longford-Westmeath drugs division, received stab wounds during a routine drugs search.
At Athlone District Court yesterday, Anthony McCarthy (20), Battery Heights, Athlone, and a juvenile were charged with assault on Saturday morning.
Mr McCarthy was charged with assault causing harm. The juvenile faces a charge of assault using a weapon, a large wooden stick.
The court heard evidence of arrest, charge and caution of the defendants. Each made no reply to the charges.
Garda Insp Jarlath Folan sought a remand in custody for both men, saying there were Garda objections to bail. Bail applications were made on behalf of both defendants.
Judge Michael O'Reilly said he would refuse bail owing to the "seriousness" of the charges.
He remanded both to a sitting of Athlone District Court on Tuesday.
