Two men were arrested today in connection with the paramilitary murder of a man in Derry last year.

James McConnell was shot dead by two masked men at his home in Woodland Avenue in the Waterside area of the city in February 2009.

The INLA claimed responsibility for killing the 38-year-old, who had previously been jailed for possessing cocaine with intent to supply.

A 42-year-old suspect was detained in the Cornshell Fields area of the city this morning. Officers later arrested a second man, aged 44. Police would only say he was taken into custody in the north west. Both were taken to Antrim police station for questioning about the murder.

The 42-year-old is also being questioned about alleged membership of a proscribed organisation.
