Gardaí investigating the death of a man in a fatal stabbing in Cork over the Christmas period have arrested two men over the killing.
Detectives investigating the death of 52-year-old Gerard Delaney outside the Manhattan bar in Ballyphehane on December 27th arrested two men in their late teens on the southside of the city this morning
They were arrested after 7.30am under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act and brought to Mayfield Garda station.
Mr Delaney was one of a group of five men who went to the bar armed with baseball bats to confront a rival faction after an early incident in Quirkie’s bar in Ballyphehane.
Detectives believe that there were up to 20 members of a rival faction drinking in the lounge of the Manhattan when they were confronted by the other grouping which included Mr Delaney.
They believe that Mr Delaney was disarmed and attacked with the baseball bat and struck across the forehead while he was also stabbed a number of times during the fracas.
They believe that Mr Delaney was retreating to a waiting car when he was stabbed a number of times in the back but he managed to make it to the car and was driven to a nearby house.
However he collapsed soon afterwards and was rushed by family members to Cork University Hospital where he died a short time later from his injuries.
Today’s arrests by gardaí under Supt Charlie Barry of Togher Garda station are the first in the investigation into the killing of Mr Delaney who lived in Mahon on Cork’s southside.
