Gardaí investigating the murder of Melanie McCarthy McNamara (16) in Tallaght have made two arrests.
The teenager and man in his early 20s were detained in Athy, Co Kildare, following a Garda operation. They are being held in Tallaght Garda station under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007.
Ms McCarthy was in a car with three men parked outside a house on Brookview Way on February 7th when a black SUV pulled alongside and one of the occupants opened fire, fatally wounding the teenager in the head.
Her friends drove her at speed to Tallaght hospital, but she was pronounced dead at 1am.
Gardaí believe the gunman was trying to shoot a man known to Ms McCarthy but botched the killing and fatally wounded the girl instead.
Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan and Minister for Justice Alan Shatter appealed for calm in the wake of the shooting. They said people in the local community with information that could help solve the crime needed to reflect on the seriousness of what had happened.
Anyone with information on the killing is asked to contact Tallaght Garda station 01-6666000, or the Garda Confidential Line 1800 666 111.
