An attack on a 62-year-old Co Clare parish priest at his home on May 23rd had a sequel at a special sitting of Limerick City Court last night before Judge Michael Reilly.
Mr John McInerney (25), Shanabooly Road, Ballynanty, Limerick, and a 15-year-old youth, also from the north side of the city, were charged with unlawfully entering the parochial house at Ballykeelaun, Parteen, and stealing £40, a bottle of gin and a gold watch, the property of Father Liam Kelly. They were also charged with taking Father Kelly's car and unlawfully damaging it.
Insp Gerry Mahon, Henry Street station, said Father Kelly had suffered serious injuries and had been in the intensive care unit of the Limerick Regional Hospital.
He said the priest's car, valued at £14,000, was burnt out.
More serious charges would be brought forward for the consideration of the DPP.
Det Sgt Jim Ryan, who arrested the defendants at 8 a.m. yesterday, said the juvenile was out of the control of his parents. In his view both accused, if given bail, would not stand trial.
Judge Reilly remanded both in custody to the city court next Wednesday.
