Two men appeared before the Special Criminal Court in Dublin today charged with membership of the INLA.
James Butler (55) and John O'Donoghue (26) both from Waterford were arrested on Monday as part of a Garda crackdown on organised crime in the area.
The pair were remanded in custody until Friday when a bail application will be made.
During the brief hearing at the three judge non-jury court the two men spoke only to confirm their names. No pleas were entered.
Mr Butler, from Ardmore Park, Ballybeg and Mr O'Donoghue, from Clonard Park, also Ballybeg were held following early morning raids in Waterford city on Monday as part of Operation Anvil. Plain clothes officers swooped on several houses in planned searches.
Three others, two men and a woman, were also arrested and have since been released without charge as files are prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.
All were held under Section 30 of the Offences Against the State Act.
Detective Garda Alan O'Connor told the court Mr O'Donoghue denied being an INLA member when informed of the charge in the precincts of the court today.
Mr Butler made no reply when told of the membership charge.
State solicitor Liam Mulholland told the court there would be objection to bail in principle. The pair are due before the court on Friday.
Operation Anvil was set up in 2005 to combat gangland activity in the greater Dublin area and extended to the rest of the country last year. Figures published for the massive investigation in Dublin revealed that since May 17th, 2005 to March 27th this year more than 6,000 people have been arrested and 640 firearms confiscated. More than €17 million worth of property has been recovered.
