Two textile factories in Northern Ireland are facing closure with the possible loss of over 250 jobs.

Magee, one of the leading names in men's clothing for decades, looked set to close its manufacturing operation in Ballymena, Co Antrim, with the loss of 112 jobs.

The company was also understood to be looking for cuts in its 120-strong manufacturing workforce in Co Donegal.

Magee chief executive Mr Ian McAvoy said pressure from the High Street for a reduction in their costs was forcing them to move manufacturing to less costly countries abroad.

"The company regrets this and I can't see manufacturing remaining here much after the end of June," he said.

Around 140 textile workers in Co Armagh have also been put on protective notice at the former Courtaulds plant in Lurgan.

Management and unions at PenNyla began talks after the workforce was put on 90 days' protective notice. The talks centred on whether there was an alternative to a closing down.

Market forces and the lower cost of goods made abroad were again cited as factors to blame.
