A man in his 20s was drowned yesterday after he entered a reservoir on horseback. The accident happened at the Devil's Bit, near Templemore, Co Tipperary, at about 5 p.m.
A Garda spokesman said the man, who was in the company of a number of friends, entered the reservoir with a horse and then got into difficulties.
His friends attempted to rescue him and managed to remove him from the water, but were unable to resuscitate him. The animal survived the incident.
Gardaí were alerted and the man was taken to Nenagh general hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Members of the local fire brigade were also called to the scene of the accident.
His name was being withheld last night until relatives could be informed.
Gardaí at Bray are investigating a traffic accident in which one man was killed and another was injured at Military Road, Enniskerry, Co Wicklow, at about 5.45 a.m. yesterday.
A 23-year-old man died as a result of the single vehicle accident while the other man was was taken to St Vincent's Hospital in Dublin where his condition last night was said to be stable.
