A man was killed in Co Kerry earlier today after being hit by a car, while another man died in a separate incident in Co Down last night
A 24-year-old Polish man was hit by a car on Woodlawn Road, Killarney, shortly after 4 am.
Two women, who were among a number of persons in the vehicle, and who are also Polish nationals were brought to Kerry General Hospital where they received treatment for minor injuries.
It is understood all those involved had been socialising together in the town earlier
The area was preserved for technical examination until lunchtime yesterday.
Gardai in Killarney have not named the dead man. owever, he had worked in a local town centre hardware store for a number of years and was well liked by customers and staff, according to local sources.
Supt Michael O'Donovan said gardaí were appealing for witnesses. Gardai were contacting the Polish embassy in order to get in touch with the man's family, before officially naming the dead man, he said.
In a separate incident, a man was killed when he was hit by a car while walking on the Dublin Road, Kilcoo in Co Down at about 10pm last night.
The driver was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Elsewhere, a 49-year-old man was arrested for questioning over the weekend about a hit and-run incident in which a 38-year-old father of three died on St Patrick’s Day.
The motorist, who was arrested yesterday, was questioned by gardaí in Co. Leitrim and later released without charge.
Jonathan Gray died when struck by a car at 11.30 p.m. on Wednesday March17th while walking on the Hilly Road in Drumshanbon.
Gardaí said a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions. (DPP).
