Accidents claimed the lives of two young people in the north-west at the weekend.
In Co Donegal, Mr Stephen McDaid (27), Drumkeen, was killed when hit by a car at Trentaboy, Drumkeen, near Letterkenny at 3.30 a.m. yesterday. Mr McDaid was a passenger in a car which had run out of petrol. He was pushing the car on a badly-lit road when hit by another car.
A total of nine people were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital with injuries sustained in the accident. One, a 19 year-old female, remains in intensive care and is reported to be stable. The other eight people, aged 19 to 24, are also stable, with wounds ranging from chest injuries to fractures and lacerations.
In Sligo, gardaí are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a 16-year-old male whose body was found in a back garden yesterday morning. A local found the youth's body in the garden of a house in Cartron Point estate at about 10.40 a.m. It is thought he may have died as a result of a climbing accident. He lived on the estate.
His body was brought to Limerick yesterday where a post-mortem was conducted by the Assistant State Pathologist, Dr Marie Cassidy. She was in Limerick carrying out a post-mortem on Ms Tanya Noonan.
In Cork, five people are recovering in hospital following a house fire in the Mayfield area at 2.20 a.m. yesterday. Three units of Cork Fire Brigade attended the scene at Lagan Grove in which the two-storey local authority terraced house was extensively damaged.
A man and two children were rescued from the house, while two others who had tried to rescue them were also injured. It is thought the fire started as a result of an unattended chip-pan.
