A large-scale search operation was under way last night in Co Waterford for two men who were reported missing and believed to be in the sea. The search was concentrated on the Bonmahon and Ballydowane area. Marie O'Halloran and Anne Lucey report.

The Irish Coast Guard co-ordinated the search, which continued until darkness and was to resume at first light.

The men, believed to be in their 20s, were last seen on rocks on the shore.

One man was re covered from the rocks close to the area where the two other men were last seen. He was taken to Waterford Airport by the Irish Coast Guard's helicopter and transferred to hospital.

The rescue services were alerted to the incident at 6.40 p.m.

Also in Co Waterford, the body of a man in his 40s was found on the beach in Tramore. The man, believed to have drowned, was dressed in a wet suit when his body was found at 5.30 p.m.

Meanwhile, three people, including two teenagers, died in traffic accidents over the weekend, and a fourth, a 75-year-old man was fatally injured in a fall from a quad bike.

The road deaths bring to 178 the number of people who have been killed in traffic accidents since the beginning of the year.

The 18-year-old woman who died in a two-car collision near Killarney on Saturday evening was named yesterday as Ms Breda Brosnan, from Rockfield, Faha, Killarney.

Ms Brosnan was a front seat passenger in a car travelling on the main N22 Killarney to Cork road, which was around five miles outside Killarney at Iron Mills, when it collided with another car at about 7.15 p.m.

Ms Brosnan died at the scene. The driver, a young male and the two occupants of the other car were taken to Tralee General Hospital. Two have been discharged and the third was yesterday described as "comfortable".

A 17-year-old youth was fatally injured in a two-car collision in Co Carlow. He was named as Mr Paul Donoghue, from Eastwood, Bagenalstown, Co Carlow.

He was a passenger in the car when the crash occurred at Rathellan, Leighlinbridge, at 7.40 p.m.

Three other teenagers in the car and the driver of the other car were treated in St Luke's hospital in Kilkenny.

The injured youths were Mr Dian Tynan (19), Slyguff, Bagenalstown; Mr Eugene Doran (17),Conway Park, Bagenalstown; and Mr Brian Nolan (18), Chestnut Court, Bagenalstown.

Meanwhile, a 73-year-old motorist died on Saturday following a crash on Friday at Kitestown, Crossabeg, Co Wexford, on the Ferrycarrig to Oylegate road.

He was named as Mr Gerard Dawson, from Westgate Tavern, Wexford town. The crash between Mr Dawson's car and a truck occurred at 2 p.m.

The man who was killed when he fell from a quad bike in Co Donegal on Friday has been named as Mr Henry Nelson (75), from Glenagannon, Cardonagh.

The accident occurred at Glenagannon at 3.30 p.m. when the quad bike veered off the road and turned over on its side.
