London - Two teenage girls were washed away as they walked through a fast-flowing river during a school trip yesterday, police said.

Cave rescue teams were called and a police helicopter launched after the 14-year-olds were carried away by Stain forth Beck, near Settle, North Yorkshire, yesterday afternoon. Police said the children were from the Royds School in Oulton, near Leeds, and had been staying in Ingleton which is about 10 miles from where the tragedy took place.

A search of the area failed to find any trace of the teenagers and rescue teams were now concentrating their hunt on the river.
