Two prison guards have been treated in hospital after being attacked in Limerick prison yesterday evening.
The two men were attacked at around 5.30 p.m. and suffered cuts and bruises to their hands and faces during a struggle with a prisoner.
A Prison Officer's Association spokesman said the first officer was set upon by an inmate believed to have been high on drugs, who attempted to take his security keys.
"He was seriously assaulted, headbutted and kicked in the face and body before another officer came to his assistance," he said. "There were others on the landing but luckily no-one else got involved and the prisoner was restrained."
The attack was stopped by other prison staff who came to their colleagues' aid.
The POA said it will be asking the management of Limerick Prison to hold a security review.
