Two men have been arrested after a teenager died following a stabbing in broad daylight in a busy street in Newry, Co Down, yesterday afternoon.

Mr Brendan McCabe (18) was stabbed as he walked along Canal Street, one of the busiest parts of the town, around lunch-time yesterday. His mother was with him when he was attacked with a knife. A police spokesman said they did not believe the motive was sectarian and they were following a definite line of inquiry.

Police said two men were seen running away from the scene after a brief struggle took place. It is understood dozens of people witnessed the attack. Mr McCabe was from Mourne View Park in the town. Neighbours said they were shocked at his death.

Yesterday evening, flowers were left on railings at the scene of the stabbing. Chief Insp Gary Hagan described the attack as a savage murder.
