Two men were arrested yesterday morning in connection with an aggravated burglary on a Co Donegal pensioner last month.
Mr Willie Bartley (74) of Clarcam, Donegal Town, was discovered badly beaten at his home two weeks ago and subsequently spent time in intensive care in Letterkenny General Hospital.
Mr Bartley, who is deaf, remains in hospital care and was transferred to a Dublin hospital on Monday for further treatment, but is expected to return to Letterkenny hospital for the immediate future.
Photographs of Mr Bartley's badly bruised and cut face appeared in national newspapers and on television.
He had been beaten with sticks that he had saved for firewood and was robbed of his savings, amounting to a few thousand euro.
It was exactly two weeks ago that a home help discovered the badly beaten pensioner at his rural home.
At 6.45 a.m. yesterday, gardaí arrested two men in Donegal Town. They were brought to Letterkenny Garda station under section four of the Criminal Justice Act.
One of the men is believed to be in his early 20s, while the other is in his late teens.
Gardaí conducted an extensive investigation in the last fortnight, including door-to-door inquiries and numerous appeals for information.
