Two men have been arrested in connection with a serious assault on a young man in Dundalk yesterday evening.
Niall Dorr (18) was attacked when a row broke out in Castle Road, Dundalk, last night.
He was taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital where his parents, David and Veronica, and his brother Shane remain by his bedside.
Two men aged 21 and 23 years were arrested at about 8pm this evening are are currently being held at Dundalk Garda station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
Senator Mark Dearey, who grew up near the scene of the attack, said residents in the quiet part of the town were stunned.
“This is just a dreadful shock. It’s an appalling incident,” he said.
“Even during the worst of the Troubles we had a peaceful time of it around here.”
The altercation happened about half an hour’s walk from the teenager’s home in Avondale Park, Dundalk.
The scene was cordoned off for a forensic examination and gardai carried out door to door inquiries throughout the day.
They have appealed for anyone who may have been in the Castle Road area between 9pm and 9.30pm yesterday or anyone with information on the attack to contact Dundalk Garda Station.
