Two men have been arrested this evening by detectives in the North in relation to the attempted murder of police in Ardoyne, north Belfast on the night of July 12th.

A 45-year-old man and a 28 year-old man were arrested by the PSNI serious crime unit detectives in north Belfast .

They were taken to the Antrim serious crime suite for questioning.

Shots were fired at police officers during the rioting that erupted after an Orange Order parade in the Ardoyne area of the city last Thursday night.

No officer was wounded by the gunfire, although 20 officers were injured during the disorder that followed the annual Orange Order parade through the area.

Most of the violence at Ardoyne followed from disturbances when a Garc parade was allowed on to the Crumlin Road at about 6.20pm on Thursday.

PSNI chief constable Matt Baggott last week expressed anger that shots were fired at police officers by suspected dissident republicans during the rioting.

Last week the PSNI said it would make a significant number of arrests during the coming weeks in relation to the violence - as happened following similar disturbances in Ardoyne in recent years.
