A pilot and his passenger were injured today when their light aircraft crashed into a house in northwest England, the emergency services said.
The 59-year-old pilot suffered severe burns when the plane came down near the M60 motorway in the west of Manchester. A woman travelling in the plane was also hurt.
The aircraft hit an empty house, although it appeared that no one on the ground was injured, a spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust said.
"They have both been taken by helicopter to hospital," she said. "There were earlier reports that both patients were suffering from burns."
Greater Manchester Police said the plane crashed into two houses shortly after noon. There was no immediate word on why the plane crashed.
"A cordon is in place and the other emergency services are also working at the scene," police said in statement. "It is not known what injuries people have suffered at this stage." The fire brigade said six fire engines had been sent to the scene.
