Two men were killed and a further five people injured when a car collided with a bicycle and a taxi in Dublin early yesterday.
The 61-year-old cyclist died at the scene, while the 23-year-old driver of the car died later in Beaumont hospital.
Five occupants of the taxi were also taken to hospital after the collision, which happened at 3.15am near the junction of Howth Road and the Offington estate in Sutton.
It is believed the car struck the cyclist before colliding with the taxi. The road was closed for several hours after the crash.
Two of the taxi occupants were treated at the Mater hospital A&E unit and released. The others were taken to Beaumont and were also discharged after treatment. The body of the cyclist was removed to Beaumont.
The Garda Press Office was withholding the names of both victims last night until all relatives have been contacted.
Meanwhile, the man killed in a crash in Co Louth on Friday morning was Yolek Whitcombe (54), of Rampark, Jenkinstown, Co Louth. The Polish national was the front-seat passenger in one of two cars that collided at Riverstown, Dundalk, shortly after 8am.
The latest deaths bring the number of road fatalities this year so far to 89.
