Two men were killed and nine others injured in road accidents in Galway and Cavan over the bank holiday weekend.

The death toll late last night was down on last year's June bank holiday when five people were killed on Irish roads and over 80 injured.

Gardaí expect a preliminary report today on the success of the road safety campaign, Operation Taisteal, which ended at midnight.

Mr Eamon Fahy (32), from Milltown, Co Galway, was killed instantly when the car in which he was driving collided with another at Kiltevna crossroads, on the Dunmore-Williamstown road, in north Galway, on Sunday night.

Mr Fahy's girlfriend was taken to University College Hospital in Galway where she is being treated in the intensive care unit.

Five young men from the Anbally, Cummer, area, who were returning from the Galway-Leitrim football game were in the other car. Firefighters had to use cutting equipment to free the cars' occupants .

On Saturday night a cyclist in Co Cavan, Mr Kevin Tuomey (26), was killed in a collision with a car at Roebuck, Mountnugent, Co Cavan. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his remains were taken to Cavan General Hospital.

In a third accident three people were seriously injured when the car in which they were travelling went out of control and struck a pole on the main Tuam-Galway road at Twomileditch on Sunday night.

Firemen and ambulances rushed to the scene, and all three occupants had to be cut from the wreckage. One of the injured is in a critical condition at University College Hospital in Galway.
