TWO MEN appeared at a special sitting of Cavan District Court on Saturday charged with assault causing harm to a 22-year-old man on March 18th.

Ciarán O’Connell died at Beaumont Hospital, Dublin, on March 19th last from injuries he received at a house party in Mullagh on St Patrick’s night.

Seán Smith (21), St Killian’s Park, Rosehill, Mullagh, Co Cavan, and Garry Wright, Headford Road, Kells, Co Meath, had been arrested by gardaí on Friday morning at their homes. They were granted bail under strict conditions by Judge Cormac Dunne yesterday.

Neither spoke during the hearing and both had attempted to cover their heads entering and leaving the courthouse. Garda Insp Fergus Treanor told the judge they wanted strict bail conditions and a curfew imposed on the two and also that they sign on at least three times a week at a local Garda station.

Both Insp Treanor and Garda Sgt Ann Marie Lardner told the court that during questioning at Bailieborough Garda station neither man spoke, but they believe more serious charges will be proffered against both by the State at a later stage.

The men will appear again at the same court on March 27th next.
