A man (45) was killed after his car crashed into an oil tanker outside Milltown, Co Galway, yesterday morning.

The collision took place shortly before 8am on the N17 between Milltown, Co Galway, and Ballindine, Co Mayo.

The man was taken to Galway University Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the tanker was not injured but was treated for shock.

A technical examination of the scene has been carried out and gardaí in Tuam are investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash.

In Co Donegal, a man (19) died after being involved in a two-car collision.

The crash took place on the N15 at the Haw, near Lifford, at 12.30am yesterday.

It is believed the man, named locally as Conor Holmes, was on his way home to Hillhead, Castlefinn, following an evening at the cinema with friends.

A passenger in Mr Holmes’s car and the driver of the other vehicle, both men, were taken to hospital but their injuries were described as not life-threatening.

Mr Holmes was a member of a well-known local family who operate a minibus hire business.

The road on either side of the scene was closed off for almost 14 hours and traffic was diverted while gardaí carried out investigations.

Mr Holmes will be buried tomorrow afternoon following funeral Mass at St Mary’s Church, Castlefinn.
