Police have confirmed that a murder inquiry has been launched into the fatal shooting of a man in Birmingham.

The 18-year-old man, who has yet to be named, suffered gunshot wounds to his head and arm and was taken to hospital in the early hours this morning, where he later died.

A police spokesman said: "At this stage it is not clear whether or not it was a single bullet which caused the injuries.

"Two local men, aged 19 and 24, were arrested on suspicion of murder and remain in custody."

Police said it was "too early" to say if they were linking the fatal shooting of the man with disturbances in the Lozells area of the city over the weekend.

The incident happened less than a mile from the church outside which the clashes started on Saturday and in which a black man was fatally stabbed.

Firearms officers were called to Melbourne Avenue, Newtown, at about 12.40am on Monday following reports of a firearm being seen.

A spokeswoman for West Midlands Police said: "It would appear that at some point while police were searching the area, an 18-year-old suffered a gunshot wound and was taken to hospital where he died. West Midlands Police has voluntarily referred the matter to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) as a matter of course."

The spokeswoman said it was "too early to tell" whether the shooting was directly connected to the disturbances in Lozells. She said the IPCC had been contacted because police officers were in the area at the time. There was no suggestion that they had been directly involved in the shooting.

The latest fatal incident followed what police described as sporadic outbreaks of disorder on Sunday night of a "considerably lower scale" than Saturday night's clashes.
