TWO MEN were killed yesterday in road crashes.
A 30-year-old man died after his car went out of control and crashed into a tree near his home. The crash occurred at about 2.10am at Killuragh, a mile from Cappamore on the Pallasgreen road in east Co Limerick.
The man, who has been named locally as Séamus Maher, died instantly. No other vehicle was involved and he was alone in the car at the time. It is understood he had dropped friends home a short time earlier after attending a social event in Cappamore.
Gardaí are investigating the possibility the victim may have experienced a black-out.
Gardaí from Bruff and two units of the fire brigade from Cappamore were at the scene within minutes while a paramedic ambulance from Limerick city was also sent to the incident. According to one rescue worker, Mr Maher’s Alfa Romeo car was ‘‘beyond recognition’’.
Specialist cutting equipment was used to remove his body which was taken to the Mid-Western Regional Hospital in Dooradoyle where a postmortem examination was undertaken yesterday.
Mr Maher, an aeronautical engineer, worked for an aircraft maintenance company and travelled around Europe for his job.
Meanwhile, gardaí in Co Louth are investigating a fatal crash yesterday afternoon which claimed the life of a man in his 70s.
The man died after his car was involved in a collision with a jeep and a lorry on a dangerous stretch of road between the villages of Dunleer and Collon in mid-Louth.
The crash caused the Ford Mondeo car being driven by the man to lose control and end up in a field beside the road.
As well as linking the two villages, the road allows motorists to cross from the N2 and head eastwards to an on-ramp for the M1 motorway. It is often used by trucks and lorries.
There were 4 passengers in the jeep but none suffered serious injury.
