TWO MEN were being questioned by PSNI detectives last night after the murder of a 40-year-old Polish man in Newry, Co Down, early yesterday morning.
The man was found in a lane at Upper Edward Street at 12.35am yesterday. His name was withheld as police contacted relatives.
Police are investigating if the man died as a result of a fight. They have appealed to anyone who may have noticed or heard a disturbance in the area at about the time of the killing to come forward with their information.
Police said the investigation was “active and ongoing”, and detectives were following a “clear and definite” line of inquiry.
Local SDLP Councillor John McArdle said he did not believe there was a racist element to the killing. He offered his sympathy to the relatives of the dead man.
“This is an awful shock to everyone here; this is the last thing you want to hear happening in your town or street.”
