Gardaí are investigating separate incidents in which two men collapsed and were hospitalised in the Midlands at the weekend.
Doctors at the Midlands Regional Hospital in Westmeath are trying to establish the cause of the men's illness.
They were rushed to hospital separately after falling ill in Mullingar and Longford on Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) confirmed that both men are now stable and recovering in the intensive care units of the Midlands Regional Hospital sites at Mullingar and Tullamore, but made no comment on the cause of their condition. They had earlier been described as critical.
A Garda spokesman confirmed they are "officially investigating both incidents" but could not disclose the nature of their investigations.
A number of tests, including toxicology tests for drugs, are expected to be carried out.
It is understood one of the patients is a 26-year-old man who was found unconscious at his apartment in Longford on Saturday evening, while the second - who is in his late teens or early 20s - collapsed on a street in Mullingar in the early hours of yesterday morning.
