The Government has urged members of the public to observe a two-minute silence across the State at midday on Thursday to remember the London bomb attacks.

In a statement the Government said the silence would be a "mark of solidarity with the people of London".

"The Taoiseach, Tánaiste, and Minister for Finance will be attending a meeting with the social partners in Dublin Castle at that time and arrangements are being made for the two minutes' silence to be observed," the statement added.

A two-minute silence is also expected to be observed across Europe.

At least 52 people died in the simultaneous bomb attacks on the British capital's public transport system during last Thursday's rush hour. This figure is expected to rise as police recover bodies from the scene of the worst attack near Russell Square Tube station.

Two people with Irish connections are missing following the attacks. Ciarán Cassidy (22), who lives with his Irish parents in the Finsbury Park area of the city, had reportedly taken the Tube to work that morning but never arrived.

A New Zealand woman, who was thought to be travelling on an Irish passport, has also yet to be found.
