Gardaí investigating the death of a Lithuanian man whose body was found dumped near Dunboyne in county Meath on Sunday afternoon arrested two women yesterday afternoon.

Two men who were arrested on Wednesday remained in Garda custody last night; all were detained in the Blanchardstown area of Dublin and were being held under the Offences Against the State Act for allegedly being in possession of information relating to a serious crime.

They are being questioned in Ashbourne and Blanchardstown Garda stations.

Meanwhile, gardaí hope to identify the body today. It is believed to be that of a 36-year-old Lithuanian man who only arrived in Ireland the week before his death.

Man caught with cannabis jailed

A north Co Dublin man caught in the course of a Garda drugs operation with cannabis resin valued at €190,000 has been jailed for five years by Judge Desmond Hogan.

Liam Arthurs (31), of Castle View Way, Swords pleaded guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to having the cannabis for sale or supply on July 7th, 2003.

Leading theatre figure dies

One of the key figures in Ireland's youth theatre movement, Eilis Mullen, has died in Dublin of cancer. The former director of the National Association for Youth Drama, she was founding member of the Dublin Youth Theatre. A member of the Dublin Shakespeare Society, she played a prominent role in organising Bloomsday celebrations.

Health official apologises for joke

A senior health official last night apologised for telling an "inappropriate" joke at a conference for health professionals in Athlone yesterday.

Mr Hugh Cawley, who heads the change management team at the Health Services Executive, acknowledged that his joke had offended members of the audience.

Some 70 health professionals were at the conference in the Hodson Bay Hotel when Mr Cawley made his address and a number said later they found his joke offensive.

Girl in high-tech scam evades jail

An Eastern European girl, who took part in a high-tech scam in which €18,000 worth of designer goods were bought with a counterfeit credit card, has escaped a jail sentence.

The girl had been a "pawn in a sophisticated operation" in which she and her ex-boyfriend had used a cloned credit card to go on a shopping spree. Earlier the court had heard that the Latvian girl (17), admitted 15 charges for theft from shops in Dublin by buying goods with a counterfeit credit card on five dates in December 2002.

Judge Thomas Fitzpatrick released the girl and ordered the probation bond to continue until September.
