There were further Irish celebrations at the Paralympic Games in Sydney yesterday when Mairead Berry from Coolock, Dublin, won a gold medal in the swimming pool.
Johnny Cronin of Cork and Margaret Grant from Stillorgan, Dublin, also took gold in the mixed pairs boccia event.
Berry, who earlier in the week took silver in the 50 metres backstroke, won the 100 metres freestyle in a world record two minutes 43.67 seconds. The Irish boccia pair trailed 2-0 to their Spanish opponents at the halfway stage, but rallied to win 5-2.
Four gold medals, a silver and a bronze have now been won by Irish athletes in the Games.
