Two Co Down youths are recovering today after being injured when they were caught in the crossfire of a gun battle between drug gangs on the island of Ibiza.

The pair, aged 18 and 19 and understood to be from Bangor and Holywood, Co Down, were wounded outside a beach front nightclub in the centre of San Antonio on Monday night.

One is still in hospital in a stable condition after being treated for a facial injury. The other released from hospital after receiving treatment for a flesh wound to his chest.

A teenage friend holidaying with the two escaped the shooting as he was still in the club.

Bullets flew when the occupants of a BMW X5 and a Seat Leon exchanged fire. Up to 20 shots were said to have been fired.

"They were shooting with no regard for tourists and passers-by," said police on the island, who were reported to have made a number of arrests.

Officers said they believed the shoot-out was between rival gangs selling drugs to holidaymakers.
