TWO PEDESTRIANS have been killed on the roads in Co Kildare.

At about 10.20pm on Tuesday, a 33-year-old man was seriously injured when he was struck by a vehicle on the N9 on the outskirts of Castledermot. He was taken to Naas General Hospital but died a short time later.

At Silliot Hill, Kildare, another male pedestrian, who was 59, was fatally struck at about 7.30am yesterday. His body was removed also to Naas General Hospital.

Kildare County Council’s road safety officer, Declan Keogh, said it was an awful start to a new year for any family. He advised people about the importance of wearing a high visibility vest.

“Many people who walk along the road may, in general, be familiar with the road. However, if they are not visible to other road users by whatever means, their chances of being seen is reduced to almost zero, until it’s too late,” he added.

“These are two incidents which could have been avoided.”

Gardaí have asked for witnesses to contact Athy Garda station at 059-863 4210, Kildare Garda station at 045-527730 or the Garda confidential line at 1800 666111.
