Two prisoners who staged a rooftop protest at a jail near Derry ended their action overnight.

The prisoners climbed on to the roof yesterday after escaping while being moved across the prison yard at Magilligan jail.

During the 10-hour protest they started a fire, which warders were able to put out, and threw tiles off the roof.

The inmates, one of whom was a serving a sentence for armed robbery and one for robbery, demanded talks with the Free Presbyterian prison chaplain, Wesley McDowell.
