Two men have been charged with membership of an illegal organisation at the Special Criminal Court today after the discovery by gardaí of arms in Co Kildare on Sunday.

Mr Richard Whyte (30), of Richardstown, Kildangan, Co.Kildare and Mr John Maloney (42) of St Martin's, Geraldine, Athy, Co Kildare were each charged with membership of an illegal organisation last Saturday.

Detective Sergeant William Hanrahan of the Special Detective Unit gave evidence of arresting Mr Whyte at his home on suspicion early on Saturday morning of being a member of an illegal organization.

Det Sgt Brendan Loughnane, also of the Special Detective Unit, told the court he arrested Mr Maloney at his home on suspicion of being a member of an illegal organization.

Both men were remanded in custody until Friday, when a bail application is expected to be heard.
