Two men suspected of sexual offences involving teenage girls have been questioned by gardai in Waterford, writes Chris Dooley.

One of the men was arrested on Thursday following searches of a number of houses in the city and released after questioning. A file has been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.

A second man was detained yesterday and was still in custody last night. Both men are in their 20s and were held under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act on suspicion of having committed an offence under Section 7 of the Child Trafficking and Pornography Act of 1998.

Supt Michael McGarry said the men, both from Waterford, were arrested following a complaint "of inappropriate sexual activity with two teenage girls". The girls are in their early teens and have been in the care of the South Eastern Health Board for some time. It is understood they made statements to the Garda this week. The alleged incidents took place before they were placed in care. Supt McGarry said material including video tapes was seized.
