Local representatives are seeking an urgent meeting with the Minister for Education, Ms Hanafin, to discuss the delay in amalgamating St. Jarlath's College and St. Patrick's College in Tuam.
The request follows concern at the lack of progress on plans that were first discussed in 1997 to merge the schools to form a new all-boys school in the growing Co Galway town.
The amalgamation will involve significantly extending the existing 200 year-old St. Jarlath's College to accommodate the total expected pupil number of 700.
A site has also been selected for a new all-girls secondary school in Tuam to accommodate the amalgamation of the Mercy Convent and Presentation College, Currylea.
The location won't be revealed until negotiations regarding its sale have concluded.
Fianna Fáil Senator Michael Kitt said the delay in moving the plans forward for the boys schools was very disappointing.
However he said he was hopeful that Minister Hanafin would have good news regarding the issue of funding for the extensive project before the end of the year.
"Everyone is keen to pursue the proposal. We will be trying to get a more definite timetable from the Department when we meet with the Minister," he said.
