Unidentified gunmen shot dead three people, including two US nationals today in an attack on a convoy of vehicles in Indonesia's rebellious Papua province.
The local police chief said 14 people were wounded, including nine foreigners, in the ambush on a road not far from a copper and gold mine operated by Freeport Indonesia, a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoran Copper and Gold Inc.
A low-level armed rebellion has simmered in Papua for decades, although foreigners have rarely been targeted.
A number of people in the convoy were teachers at an international school in Tembagapura. It was unclear if any children were in the convoy.
