A 23-year-old man died when the car he was driving burst into flames after colliding with another vehicle near Cahersiveen, Co Kerry, yesterday.

He is from the locality but has not yet been named by the Garda.

A female passenger, believed to be his girlfriend, was pulled to safety from the burning car by other motorists. The male driver and female passenger of the other vehicle were injured and taken to hospital.

The crash occurred at 4.40pm at Tullig on a relatively straight stretch of road between Caherciveen and Waterville on the Ring of Kerry.

Supt Michael O'Donovan said it was lucky there had not been more fatalities. The car in which the dead man was travelling was completely burnt out, he said.

On Saturday, a 62-year-old man was killed near Ballinasloe, Co Galway. Michael Farrell, Newtown Ganaveen, Laurencetown, was hit by a car at Ohillymore, Laurencetown, at about 2.15am.
