A Kilkenny man has been jailed by Mr Justice Paul Carney at the Central Criminal court for two years for sexually abusing his sister over a four-year period.

The victim came forward after hearing about the Father Brendan Smyth affair and other child abuse cases to come before the courts.

The 40-year-old defendant pleaded guilty to counts of rape, buggery and sexual assault on various dates between 1974 and 1978.

Mr Justice Carney said he was imposing a two year sentence in this case because of the time-span since the offences happened, and a psychological report which indicated the man was no longer a danger to anybody.
