TWO TEENAGERS were being questioned by gardaí in Limerick last night about the death of a father of three who died following an assault at the weekend.
Mike Molloy (39), Garryglass Avenue, Ballinacurra Weston, Limerick, died on Saturday from head injuries suffered in an incident near his home the previous night.
Gardaí believe two men were involved in an assault on Mr Molloy which they say was not feud or gangland related.
Gardaí were alerted to the incident on Garryglass Avenue at about 8pm on Friday. An ambulance was called but it is understood the injured man did not go to hospital. At about 2pm the next day, Mr Molloy was found in an “ill state” and was taken to the Mid Western Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A postmortem carried out at the hospital by State Pathologist Dr Marie Cassidy found that Mr Molloy died from head injuries.
Two youths in their late teens were arrested yesterday in connection with the death. Both were were being held last night at Roxboro Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
A Garda spokesman confirmed that two men were “helping gardaí with inquiries”.
Mr Molloy is survived by his partner Geraldine, children Mickie, Jamie and Dale, and his mother Pat. His removal took place last night and he will be buried today following 11am Mass at Our Lady of Lourdes church.
Local Fine Gael councillor Jim Long last night described the circumstances of Mr Molloy’s death as “appalling and tragic”.
“Mickie was relatively quiet and kept himself to himself,” Mr Long said. “He has a big family in Ballinacurra Weston and I sincerely sympathise with them. His late father, also Mickie, was a gentleman.”
