The coach who led Tyrone to two All-Ireland championships in three years is to be awarded an honorary degree for services to Gaelic football.

Mickey Harte will be recognised by Queen's University, Belfast on the same day as his daughter, Michaela, graduates from St Mary's Teaching College.

Chris Patten, the architect of Northern Ireland 's policing reforms, broadcaster Eamonn Holmes and CBI director general Sir Digby Jones will also be presented with honorary doctorates in the summer.

Mr Harte steered Tyrone to their first Sam Maguire in 2003 when they defeated neighbours Armagh.

The coach repeated the feat last September when the county overcame Kerry to claim their second title.

Lord Patten, the former Governor of Hong Kong, will be recognised for distinction in public service; Mr Holmes for services to broadcasting; and Sir Digby Jones for services to business and commerce.

Queen's also confirmed environmentalist Jonathon Porritt will be awarded an honorary degree for distinction in sustainable development while Irish soprano Angela Feeney will be recognised for services to the performing arts.

A university spokeswoman said US businessman David Figgins, who sits on the International Advisory Board of Invest Northern Ireland , and Belfast-born Nicky Kinnaird, founder of the beauty product retail venture Space NK, will also be honoured.
