PAUL McGIRR, a 17 year old A Level student at St Ciaran's College, Ballygawley, died yesterday as a result of injuries sustained playing for Tyrone in the Ulster minor football championship against Armagh in Omagh.

Mr McGirr, from Dromore, was the youngest of six children. Playing at half forward, the teenager was fatally injured in an accidental collision in the first half with the Armagh goalkeeper as he scored his side's only goal in a match which Tyrone eventually won by 1-10 to 0-9.

The player was treated for five minutes by medical personnel on the pitch before being stretchered off and taken to Tyrone County Hospital, Omagh. He died from his injuries at about 6.30 p.m. yesterday evening.

He was a former player with the Errigal Chiaran club, prior to transferring to Dromore GFC. His older brother Michael plays with Errigal Chiaran.
