The company, which will continue to employ 300 people, said the number of redundancies was less than it anticipated earlier in the year.

Explaining its decision, an Adria spokeswoman said: "This reorganisation is as a direct result of particularly harsh global trading conditions and is necessary to ensure the company can continue to face the future demands of the marketplace.

"The company has communicated directly with all staff today and has already entered into a 90 days consultation period with union representatives.

"During this period it regrets any uncertainty for employees arising from this decision and is committed to inform employees concerned as soon as possible."

Looking to the future, the spokeswoman said: "Despite the current market conditions, Adria remains confident in its position that the company has a long-term future in Strabane and will continue to be a significant employer in the area.

"The company believes this move will secure a sustainable future in Strabane where Adria will continue to operate as a centre of excellence for its hosiery business worldwide."

Adria manufactures ladies, children's and men's hosiery products in Northern Ireland, Turkey, China and Colombia. It supplies Marks & Spencer in the UK and Victoria's Secret in North America.
