Members of the North Eastern Health Board yesterday decided to alter an earlier decision to locate a regional breast care cancer unit in Navan, writes Elaine Keogh. It will instead be located in Drogheda as recommended by the board's director of cancer services, Dr James Hayes.
In May the board passed a motion proposed by a Meath county councillor, Mr Tommy Reilly, that the unit be located in Our Lady's Hospital in Navan. Yesterday's meeting was called to debate a motion signed by 16 of the 29 board members to alter that decision and instead implement the report as presented.
Yesterday's meeting heard that Drogheda was chosen because infrastructure and services for breast cancer patients already existed there. After a lengthy debate, the board passed the motion by a 15-9 majority.
