The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged the United States to intervene to stop Israel from carrying out more attacks against Palestinians.

The official UAE news agency WAM said the appeal was made by Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Sultan bin Zaid al-Nahayan at a meeting in the UAE capital with visiting US Assistant Secretary of State Edward Walker.

"His highness urged the United States, in its capacity as a sponsor of the Middle East peace process, to immediately intervene and pressure Israel to stop its daily brutal aggression against the Palestinian brothers," WAM said.

The agency said Sheikh Sultan slammed Israel's use of heavy weapons against Palestinians waging an eight-month-old uprising against Israeli occupation.

At least 448 Palestinians, 87 Israelis and 13 Israeli Arabs have been killed in the revolt which erupted in September after Middle East peace talks became stalled.

Muslim countries agreed at an emergency meeting in Qatar yesterday to stop political contacts with the Jewish state until Israel ended deadly clashes with the Palestinians and heeded United Nations resolutions on settling the Middle East conflict.

The UAE had repeatedly criticised the United States for what Arabs see as Washington's blind support for Israel.
