UEFA has formed a special security taskforce with the power to postpone matches at a moment's notice in the face of possible military strikes.

The four-member taskforce will be on 24-hour alert during the current crisis stemming from the September 11th attacks on the United States.

It comprises chief executive Gerhard Aigner, competition director Jacob Erel, communications manager Mike Lee and director of professional football and marketing Lars-Christer Olsson.

Their job will be to assess and analyse information swiftly as it comes in and determine if Champions League or UEFA Cup matches can be staged safely.

The taskforce will take its recommendations to UEFA's permanent emergency committee and president Lennart Johansson, but it can also take decisions without consultation if there is imminent danger.

"Under UEFA's competition rules all major decisions can be made by the CEO [Aigner]," said Lee, underlining that such action is unlikely. "The situation here is to have a group to help advise.
