A schoolboy was today warned he faces a "substantial custody sentence" after being convicted of raping an au pair as she took a short-cut to a station.

The 15-year-old, from north London, had denied the offence but was found guilty by an Old Bailey jury.

The court was told he threatened to kill the 25-year-old Czech woman after telling her he had a knife.

Mr Brendon Morris, prosecuting, said the au pair had been trying to get to central London for a shopping trip in November 2001.

Using an A-Z, she had gone down an alley in an attempt to get to Edmonton Green train station in north London.

But she was confronted there by the youth who ordered her to undress and assaulted her.

Mr Morris said: "She tried to run away but he grabbed her shoulders and said he had a knife in his pocket and was going to kill her."

He ran off after throwing her clothes over a fence into allotments. DNA taken from the woman matched that of the schoolboy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, and he was also picked out in an identity parade.

Recorder Mr John Bevan remanded the teenager into local authority care for pre-sentence reports and warned him that "a substantial custody sentence for an offence of this gravity will be very likely indeed".

The case will be dealt with at Blackfriars Crown Court on April 7. The prosecution will also decide whether to proceed with two indecent assault charges against him on women aged 15 and 24 years of age.
