The British Labour Party is to introduce a raft of measures to protect children from being "groomed" by paedophiles over the internet.

Home Secretary Mr Jack Straw is to announce that British police will be able to apply for paedophile prevention orders when they suspect improper approaches are being made.

The orders would prevent any further approaches to youngsters over the web by the named individual.

A breach of the order would be a criminal offence carrying a maximum five year jail sentence.

Labour sources confirmed Mr Straw would also announce plans for government backing for "child safety software" to be installed in all personal computers aimed at the family market.

And a "family friendly" kitemark symbol will be awarded to internet providers who back the government's stance.
